Henry James Bowman was appointed Lieutenant in the Derbyshire Regiment on 28 January 1882. He served in Egypt in 1882, and in Sikkim in 1888, where two companies of the regiment provided the only British troops involved in the campaign. Promoted to Captain in January 1890, he later served in Tirah, including the actions of Dargai on 18 October 1897, and the forcing of the Sampagha and Arhanga Passes. He was severely wounded by a gunshot at Mastura on 13 November 1897. Promoted to Major in February 1901, he retired in December 1904 but was recalled for service in the Great War as Commandant of a Prisoner of War camp and promoted Lieutenant-Colonel in August 1915. He died at Aylsham, Norfolk, on 22 June 1925.
