James Fox Brough was born on 17 September 1842, and joined the Artillery as a Cadet in 1859. He served in the Looshai Expedition 1871-72; Afghan War 1878-80; Zaila Field Force 1884; Sudan Frontier Field Force 1885-86; India 1887-91; Commanding Royal Artillery, Curragh, Ireland, 1896.
