Edward Lee was appointed an Ensign, by purchase, in the 40th Regiment on 12 June 1835, becoming Lieutenant, also by purchase, in April 1839. He served with the 40th in Scinde and Afghanistan from February 1839 to November 1842, and was severely wounded at Candahar on the 12th January 1842. He served with the 10th Foot at the battle of Sobraon (Medal), and during the whole of the siege operations before Mooltan, and battle of Goojerat (Medal with Clasps). He was promoted to Captain in August 1848 and was appointed Paymaster of the 10th Foot the following month.
