William Walpole Murdoch joined the Royal Artillery as a Lieutenant on 1 June 1856, progressing through the ranks to become Colonel in October 1886. He served with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low in 1895 as Colonel on the Staff Commanding Royal Artillery (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp).
