Joseph Julius Steiner served as a Trooper with the Bechuanaland Border Police in the Matabeleland operations of 1893. He later took part in the Jameson Raid in December 1895 and January 1896, as a trooper in the Artilllery Troop of the Mashonaland Mounted Police. In the subsequent 1896 operations he served as a Trooper with the Matabeleland Relief Force.
