William Gibson was born in the City of York and was a draper by trade before enlisting for the Royal Marines on 12 November 1852, aged 19 years 8 months. He joined the Royal Marine Artillery on 15 February the following year and was discharged on 29 November 1864 after 12 years service. He served during the 2nd China war aboard H.M. Ships Calcutta and Samson. He also served in the Baltic 1854-55 for which a named medal is known to exist.
