Mark M. Gillies was appointed an Ensign in the 55th Regiment on 15 June 1855, becoming Lieutenant in April 1858 and Captain in February 1864. He served with the 55th in the Bhootan expedition in 1865 (Medal with Clasp). He subsequently rose to be Colonel of a Regimental District in March 1890.
