Arthur Peel was born on 12 February 1845 at Swinton Park, Manchester, son of William Mason Peel, an East India merchant of the firm Peel, Bellair & Company. He was educated at Wimbledon School and, having been nominated a cadet in the H.E.I.C., attended the Royal Indian Military College, Addiscombe. Placed on the Bengal General List as an Ensign in June 1861, he was subsequently posted to the 101st Foot. He served in the Umbeyla campaign in 1863, including the storming of the Conical Hill and the attack and capture of the Crag picquet. He was promoted Lieutenant in October 1863 and transferred to the 7th Hussars in October 1874, where he remained for the rest of his military career, becoming Colonel in December 1887. He commanded the 7th Hussars for two years before moving to half-pay in December 1889. He was appointed Assistant Adjutant-General at Colchester for five years and retired finally in January 1898. He died in 1922 aged 77.
