Died of wounds received at the battle of Inkermann

Richard Dunckley enlisted into the 23rd Regiment at Dublin on 30 August 1849, aged 17. He was promoted to Corporal on 7 July 1850, and to Sergeant on 12 August 1851

During the fighting at Inkermann on 5 November 1854, Sergeant William Coleby, of the 23rd, led a party of five bandsmen to where Sergeant Dunckley lay severely wounded in front of the Five Gun Battery and successfully carried him to the rear, where he died. For this exploit Coleby applied for the award of the Victoria Cross but was refused. Richard Dunckley’s name (spelled Dunkley) appears on the Regiment’s Crimean War Memorial in High Street, Carmarthen. Sold with research including photographs of the Crimean memorial.
