Francis Arthur Irwin was born in December 1914 and joined the Army Apprentices School at Chepstow at age 14 as an apprentice blacksmith. He served in the ranks 17 yrs. 157 dys.; W.O. Cl.2, 5 yrs. 284 dys.; W.O. Cl.1, 4 yrs. 141 dys.; Commissioned Lt. (Qr. Mr.) R.E.M.E. 20 February 1956; Capt. (Qr. Mr.) 18 June 1958; Major (Qr. Mr.) 18 June 1964.
