Peter Young Lyle was educated at Glasgow University where he was a member of the Officer’s Training Corps. He was commissioned in 1914 and posted to the 4th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He served in France and Belgium from 23 November 1914 to 10 November 1915. He returned to France on 19 March 1917, was wounded in action and decorated with the Military Cross.
