D.S.O. London Gazette 18 October 1917, citation London Gazette 7 March 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an attack on the enemy lines all the company officers became casualties. He went out from headquarters, collected troops, and organised a line of defence, in spite of close-range sniping, which eventually held back an enemy counter-attack. He remained at his post until the battalion was relieved.’

Bar to M.C. London Gazette 26 September 1917, citation London Gazette 9 January 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as Lewis gun officer. He showed great skill and contempt of danger in supervising the placing of guns and repelling hostile counter-attacks. In company with another officer he also carried out two difficult and dangerous patrols over ground rendered almost impassable by wire, rain and the effects of shell-fire, establishing contact and enabling his battalion to move forward on a correct alignment when it had been ordered to counter-attack on an unknown front. He worked with the greatest energy and fearlessness until completely exhausted.’
