After over twenty-five years’ service, Sergeant John Sutherland, Ashton, Preston, a native of Golspie, retired early in the year from the Lancashire Constabulary. Sergeant Sutherland has had a long and varied career, both as a soldier and policeman. He enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders as a young man, and fought in the Boer War. While he was a reservist, and serving as a member of the Lancashire Constabulary, the Great War broke out in 1914. He was recalled to the colours, and whilst fighting in France with the 8th Battalion, he was twice wounded, the second time most seriously. The war over, he returned to his police duties (Ref Cabar Feidh).
