His baptism of fire was received in the glorious episode in which the regiment took part at Balaklava. He also took part in the expeditions to Kertch and Yenikale, and in the siege and capture of Sebastopol, and was one of the volunteers who accompanied Lieutenants Fenwick and Macbean into the Redan; was with the regiment when it proceded to take part in the Indian Mutiny Campaign, serving at the relief of Lucknow, battle of Cawnpore, siege and capture of Lucknow, battle of Bareilly and various other actions of the campaign. Served also in the Eusofzai Campaign of 1863-64, and at the Umbeyla Pass.’
