David Legg was born at Bervie, Kincardine, and enlisted at Montrose on 28 January 1846, aged 18 years, a Comb Maker by trade. He served in the Crimea for 2 years 4 months, and in India for 9 years 1 month. He was discharged on 27 August 1867, being unfit for further service. His discharge papers state: ‘Is an old soldier and has done his duty well. This man’s health has been failing since 1862, after service in Peshawur, attributable to long service, exposure during the Cimean War and Indian Mutiny; also to the debilitative effects of the climate of India and especially of the Peshawur Valley. Has not injured his health by vice or intemperance and could if discharged contribute to earning a livelihood.’
