William Carter enlisted on 31 August 1857; Sergeant January 1860; Colour Sergeant January 1866; Quartermaster Sergeant February 1875; Sergeant Major 1880. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in 1875 which he exchanged for the M.S.M. and annuity of £15 on 25 December 1887. Sergeant Major Carter was the head of a highly distinguished Buffs family. He had seven sons, all of whom were born into the Buffs and served in the army, all but two of them in the Buffs. Of his five daughters, all but one married into the Buffs.
