Joseph Munn-Mace was a pre-war Territorial officer with the 2nd (Kent & Cinque Ports) Volunteer Battalion at Cranbrook. He was in command of the 5th Battalion, East Kent Regiment, when it sailed for India in November 1914, and continued in command when the battalion was ordered to Mesopotamia, arriving there on 6 December 1915. The battalion took part in the attempted relief of Kut and was heavily engaged at the action of Sheikh Saad on 7 January 1916. Three officers and 38 men of the 5th Buffs were killed in action, and Lieutenant-Colonel Munn-Mace and 13 officers, and 196 other ranks were wounded.
