D.C.M. London Gazette 29 August 1917: ‘For marked gallantry and devotion to duty. He has on several occasions led a platoon most gallantly and has many times brought in wounded.’

The 1/5th Battalion left for India in October 1914, and became part of the 14th Indian Division, 35th Infantry Brigade. The battalion served in Mesopotamia and Persia.
