An important group of eight to Major-General Sir Guy Bainbridge, K.C.B., East Kent Regiment and a Divisional Commander during the Great War

Queen’s Sudan 1896-98 (Bimb. E. G. T. Bainbridge, E.A.); Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 5 clasps, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen (Lt.Col., E. Kent Rgt.); 1914-15 Star (Brig. Gen., C.B.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaf (Maj. Gen.); Legion of Honour, 4th class, gold and enamels; French Croix de Guerre 1914-18; Khedive’s Sudan 1896-1908, 3 clasps, Hafir, Sudan 1897, Khartoum (Lieut., The Buffs & Bimb. Edmund Guy Tulloch Bainbridge was born on 11 November 1867, eldest son of Colonel Edmond Bainbridge, K.C.B., R.A. He was educated at Marlborough College and Sandhurst, and joined the Buffs in 1888. He was attached to the Egyptian Army from March 1896 to November 1898, and served in the Dongola Expedition of 1896 with the 1st Battalion, Egyptian Army (Despatches London Gazette 3 November 1896, Egyptian Medal with clasp). During the Nile Expedition of 1897, he was detached for service with the gunboats and supervised their safe passage over the Fourth Cataract in August 1897 (Despatches London Gazette 25 January 1898, clasp to Egyptian Medal). He next served in the Nile Expedition of 1898, and during the first phase was employed on the lines of communication. He was subsequently present at the battle of Khartoum (Despatches London Gazette 30 September and 9 December 1898, Brevet of Major, Queen’s Medal, clasp to Egyptian Medal).

Bainbridge served on the staff during the War in South Africa and was present at Paardeberg, Poplar Grove, Hout-Nek, Zand River, Relief of Kimberley, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen, and Lady Brand (Despatches
London Gazette 8 February and 16 April 1901, Brevet of Lt.-Colonel, Queen’s Medal with 5 clasps).

During the Great War, Bainbridge commanded the 110th Infantry Brigade and afterwards the 25th Division. He was mentioned in despatches seven times, promoted Major-General, created K.C.B., and awarded the Legion of Honour, 3rd and 4th classes, and the French Croix de Guerre. After the War, he was G.O.C. 1st Division at Aldershot from 1919 to 1923, when he retired. Sir Guy Bainbridge died on 27 September 1943.
