John Wallace Pickthall was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 18 January 1902, and served in the South African War in 1902, including operations in the Transvaal, March to 31 May 1902 (Medal with four clasps). He was subsequently seconded for service with the Indian Army, becoming a Double Company Officer with the 3rd Brahmans. He is not listed in the Army List 1914.
