Major H. E. Featherstone, or “Feathers” as he became known in the regiment, was born in the 2nd Bn. The Buffs at Malta on 12 March 1860. He enlisted into the 1st Somerset Militia in March 1872 and transferred to the 1st Buffs on 14 April 1880. He became Lance Corporal in September 1880; Corporal in November 1880; Lance Sergeant in September 1881; Sergeant Drummer in February 1881; Colour Sergeant in November 1884; and Regimental Sergeant Major in October 1892. He was commissioned Lieutenant & Quartermaster in November 1903, and transferred to the 1st Lancashire Fusiliers in November 1907, becoming Captain in November 1913, and Major in July 1917. Major Featherstone was placed on the retired list on 30 June 1920 having had a total service of 48 years. He served with the Relief Force in the operations in Chitral in 1896, and in Malakand 1897-8 during operations in the Mamund Country, including actions at Utman Khel, Buner, and the attack and capture of the Tanga Pass. He is also entitled to the British War Medal for service in Hejaz, 5 November to 16 December 1914.
