Henry Augustus Breffney Ternan was born on 16 May 1876, and was educated at Lancing College and Sandhurst. He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 25 March 1896; Lieutenant, 7 August 1897; Captain, 22 May 1900. He served in the campaign on the North West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockhart in 1897-98, with the 1st Battalion The Buffs, with the Malakand Field Force, including operations in Bajour and the Mohmand country with the Utman Khel Column; and with the Buner Field Force, including the attack and capture of the Tanga Pass (Medal with clasp). Captain Ternan took part in the operations in the Aden Hinterland 1903-04, and retired in 1910. He was awarded the O.B.E. during the Great War as a Major, and died in 1958.
