Archibald Francis Campbell Johnston was born on 29 July 1857, son of Alexander Johnston, H.M. Deputy-Superintendent and Lieut.-Governor of the Island of Hong Kong. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Buffs on 21 June 1879, and promoted to Lieutenant on 24 October 1880. He served in Natal during the operations against the Zulus between 11 January and 1 September 1879 (medal). Promoted to Captain in July 1887, and subsequently retired, he was recalled for service during the Great War and served in France from 30 November 1915. He was subsequently attached to the Commissariat and Transport Staff for service in Egypt and is entitled to a 1914-15 Star Trio. Only two officers received the South Africa medal without clasp.
