Louis Falkner Brown was first commissioned in the Royal Engineers in January 1868. He commanded No. 10 Company Bengal Sappers and Miners in both campaigns of the Second Afghan War, taking part in the advance on Kandahar and the Halmand, and the advance from Kandahar to Kabul, being present at the battle of Ahmed Khel, and eventually returning to India by the Khyber route (Mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major, Medal with clasp). He retired as Colonel in February 1905.
