Hyderabad 1843 (Lieutt. W. Ashburner, 3rd Lt. Cavy.) fitted with contemporary silver clip and bar suspension, contact marks, especially to the obverse, otherwise nearly very fine £400-500

William Ashburner passed his examination in January 1837 and was appointed Cornet in the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry in December of that year, and promoted to Lieutenant in January 1842. He was severely wounded in action with the enemy at the heights near Hykulzie, in the Pisheen Valley, Scinde, on 28 April 1842. He was subsequently granted 12 months pay for his ‘dangerous and severe wounds’ received on that occasion. Ashburner next served in the Scinde campaign and was engaged in the battle of Hyderabad for which he received the medal. He subsequently served with his regiment in the Persian Campaign, including the action at Khooshab (Medal with clasp), and in the Indian Mutiny (Medal). He became Commandant of the 1st Light Cavalry in 1867, and retired in December 1874. Sold with further research including copy service papers.
