John Ryan was born in Dublin, lived in Cardiff and enlisted at Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Serving with the 2nd battalion Leinster Fusiliers, he was killed in action at the battle of Passchendaele, 31 July 1917. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
