W. J. Pickering was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 44th Field Battery, R.C.A., on 1 May 1932 and was advanced to Lieutenant on 8 August 1936. As a Captain in the R.C.A.P.C. he was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (Canada) (Canada Gazette 19 May 1945), and in the same rank and corps was awarded the Canadian Decoration, ref.
