Samuel Frank Clarke was born in Havant, Hampshire and educated at Mile End House School, Portsmouth. A Bank Clerk by occupation, he attested for the R.A.M.C. (T.F.) on 11 March 1913. With the onset of the Great War, he served with the B.E.F. in France, 5 November 1914-6 January 1915, entering the theatre as a Corporal in the 26th Field Ambulance, R.A.M.C. and latterly with the 3rd Wessex Field Ambulance R.A.M.C. He was discharged to a commission in the 5th Reserve Battalion Hampshire Regiment on 23 November 1916. Serving as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 6th attached 11th Battalion Hampshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 7 August 1917, aged 24 years. He was buried in the Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Lieutenant Clarke was the brother of Mrs Gwendoline Ida Mullane of Homewell House, Havant.
