At Waterloo, command of the 15th Hussars devolved upon Captain Thackwell. He was severely wounded and had two horses shot from under him. Wounded in both arms, his left arm was amputated close to shoulder. His group of insignia was sold at Christies, 17 November 1987. In addition to the insignia represented by the above ribbon, he was awarded the Guelphic Order, K.H.; Ghuznee 1838; Maharajpoor Star and Afghanistan, Order of the Dooranee Empire.
