Andrew Browne Cunningham was born in 1883. He entered the Royal Navy in 1898 and saw service in the Boer War. For his service in the Great War he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the D.S.O. and 2 bars. In the Second World War he was C-in-C Mediterranean, 1939-42; Head of the British Admiralty Delegation in Washington, 1942; Naval C.-in-C Expeditionary Force North Africa, 1942; C-in-C Mediterranean, 1943; and First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, 1943-46. Attained the rank of Admiral of the Fleet in 1943. For his many excellent wartime services, he was created Viscount Hyndhope in 1946, a K.T. in 1945; G.C.B. in 1941; and O.M. in 1946 (the Order of the Thistle and Order of Merit are never represented on a riband bar). In addition to his British honours he was awarded a number of high allied honours. With copied research and certified provenance of the riband bar.
