Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, undated reverse, 1 clasp, Suakin 1885 (Major G. S. Nash, R.M.L.I.) minor contact marks, good very fine £300-350

George Stevens Nash was born in 1840, the son of a Clergyman from Chatham. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Marines in April 1859 and was promoted to Lieutenant in February 1861; Captain in September 1874, and Major in July 1881. Going to Egypt in 1884, he was in command of Port Said, 22-30 May 1884. Then in command of Island Town of Suakin, 9 June-15 July 1884 and of Fort Euryalus and Carysfort, 15-25 July 1884 - the three posts being subject to frequent attacks from the enemy. Major Nash was then placed in command of Suez, 12 August-8 November 1884; in command of the 2nd Battalion Royal Marines, 8-19 November and in command of Suakin & Reserve Depot, 11-29 March 1885. He was then present at the taking and burning of Tamaai, 3 April 1885 and in the operations around Handoub in defence of the railway, 5-14 April 1885. Returning to the U.K. later in the year, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in May 1886. Placed on the Retired List on 21 April 1890, he died on 5 April 1919. With copied service papers.
