Corieltauvi, Vep, Unit, wreath design, rev. horse right, vep above, the p extended into the horse’s back, five-pointed star behind, pellet and reversed s below, 1.04g/10h (BMC –; VA –; cf. S 408). Slight edge chip, otherwise about very fine, extremely rare £150-200

The adaptation of the reverse design seems to hark back to the early ‘Hostidius’ units where the boar is pierced with a spear in its back. Many of these coins also have the reversed s symbol (and sometimes a pellet) below the horse (cf. DNW CC1, lots 5180-1). Quite why a design motif which would then have been perhaps 40 years old should suddenly be revived must remain a matter of speculation
