Charles II (1660-1685), Milled coinage, Uniface squeeze in lead, undated, of the obverse die of the Petition and Reddite Crowns by T. Simon, large elaborate laureate and draped bust right, signed SIMON in script below, 212.33g (L & S 9B, this coin). Struck from a rusty die and exhibiting a die crack from the shoulder to the CA of CAROLVS, a few surface marks, otherwise extremely fine, as made, UNIQUE £5,000-6,000

Provenance: SCMB August 1975 (2347); M.C.S. Rasmussen FPL 4, Spring 2003 (200); L. La Rivière Collection, Spink Auction 166, 12 November 2003, lot 27.

The rusty state of the die and the presence of the die crack suggest that this impression was taken some time after the coins were originally struck in the 1660s. Linecar investigates several hypotheses in the footnotes of his catalogue
