Sir Fred Goodwin, the vilified former chief executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland, became the deputy chief executive of the Clydesdale Bank in 1995. He ruthlessly generated cost savings and efficiencies during his three years at the bank, earning the nickname ‘Fred the Shred’, before moving to RBS in 1998
