18th Century Tokens, Shropshire, Coalbrook Dale, Reynolds & Co, Trial or Proof Halfpenny, 1792, in copper, view of the bridge, no ship underneath, iron bridge at coalbrook dale· and date around, erected anno 1779· span 100 feet. in centre, rev. man working machine, inclined plane at ketley· 1789 in exergue, edge payable at coalbrook-dale and ketley, 14.80g/12h (DH – [dies as DH 9 before the ship added]). Trifling scuff mark in waves, otherwise virtually as struck with most attractive chocolate-brown patina, previously unpublished and UNIQUE

Illustrated on the front cover. This significant and previously unknown piece, acquired as a specimen of DH 12 (!), completes one further link in the chain of understanding the production sequence of the Coalbrook Dale halfpence struck by Peter Kempson from dies by Peter Wyon. It almost certainly represents Wyon’s first efforts for the obverse of the last of the Coalbrook Dale types, in which the outer legend is placed outwith a linear inner circle
