Alfred the Great (871-899), Penny, Cross and Lozenge type, Burgwald, diademed bust right, elfred rex, rev. long cross, lozenge in centre, bvrgvald in angles, 1.41g/11h (N 629; S 1058). Very slightly crimped but struck on a full flan, about extremely fine and extremely rare, the moneyer apparently unpublished £3,500-4,000

This type was also struck by Ceolwulf II of Mercia, who died c. 879. The issue can thus be dated to the early part of Alfred’s reign, within a few years of 880. The moneyer Burgwald is not published for either Alfred or Ceolwulf but he was an accomplished engraver, producing an obverse die which may well have been copied directly from a Roman original
