The bank opened on 1 November 1834 and was soon competing aggressively against the National Bank as each sought to expand their network of branches. A loss of confidence in the new bank led to a temporary closure in November 1836 and although it was to continue for another few years, it stopped payment for a second and final time in 1841 and was finally wound up in 1851
