D.C.M. London Gazette 12 March 1919; citation 2 December 1919. ‘In the Ypres sector, during the operations of the 28th/29th September 1918, when a body of the enemy were observed massing on a flank, it became necessary to warn one of our advanced posts who were unaware of this impending attack. After two runners had been shot in the attempt he volunteered and successfully took a message to this post, with the result that the enemy were beaten back. Afterwards, he went out with a small patrol and captured over 20 prisoners who had taken up a position on the flank and were enfilading the post. He showed marked courage, and rendered very valuable service’.

The recipient came from Chelsea.
