Eric Wells Morris was born on 8 December 1890. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Connaught Rangers on 4 March 1911 and promoted to Lieutenant on 15 August 1914. He was appointed Temporary Captain in September 1915 and Captain in October the same year. He was advanced to Acting Major attached to the 4th Battalion Cheshire Regiment in April 1917, and Acting Lieutenant-Colonel in August 1918. For his services in the Great War, latterly attached to the Cheshire Regiment, he was twice mentioned in despatches and awarded the D.S.O. After the war he transferred to the Indian Army and saw service on the North West Frontier. In 1933 he was appointed Officer Commanding and Instructor at the A.T. School of the Indian Army Service Corps Training Centre at Chaklala.
