Alfred John Varney was born in Bermondsey, London. A Decorator by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion The Queen’s Regiment, he attested for the 22nd Battalion London Regiment (T.F.) at Bermondsey on 30 June 1908, and was given the service number of ‘1’. He gained the rank of Serjeant in 1910, and was appointed Paymaster Serjeant in October 1914 and Bandmaster Serjeant in Deember the same year. During the Great War Varney served in France/Flanders, 24 June-14 December 1916; Salonika, 15 December 1916-16 June 1917, and with the Egypt Expeditionary Force, 17 June-4 September 1917. Serjeant Varney was discharged from the Army on 15 October 1917 due to sickness (shell-shock) and age (51 years) and was awarded the Silver War Badge.
