William Alexander Greig was born in June 1898 and entered the Royal Flying Corps in early 1918, direct from his employment as an engineer draughtsman in Motherwell. Having then attended various training establishments as a Flight Cadet, he qualified as an Observer and was embarked for France in July 1918, where he attended a W./T. course before joining the strength of No. 49 Squadron, a D.H. 9 unit operating out of Rozoy-en-Brie. Initially employed on low-level bombing sorties, he would later have been transferred to 49’s high-altitude day bombing agenda, work carried out in the face of intensive opposition. Still with the Squadron at the end of hostilities, Greig served in the Army of Occupation in Germany, where he transferred to No. 25 Squadron. He returned home in September 1919, and shortly afterwards was placed on the Unemployed List.
