John Howlett was born in Laugham, Norfolk. A Labourer by occupation and a former member of the 3rd Battalion Norfolk Regiment, he enlisted into the Coldstream Guards at Norwich on 27 April 1890, aged 19 years. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa, 9 August 1900-4 October 1902. He was discharged as medically unfit for further service on 28 February 1903. Sold with copied service papers.
