Robert Wilberforce Myburgh was born on 23 July 1873. He became a Naval Cadet in January 1887 and was appointed a Midshipman in July 1889, being promoted to Sub-Lieutenant in July 1893 and Lieutenant in October 1895. During the Boer War he served as a Lieutenant on the cruiser Doris. As Lieutenant on the Dido he was awarded the Royal Humane Society’s Testimonial on vellum ‘for plucky action in rescuing a seaman in Lamlash Bay, Arran, on 23 September 1904’. In December 1908 he was promoted to Commander and with the onset of war was serving with a torpedo boat flotilla. During 1915-19 he was based at Tamar (Hong Kong). He retired with the rank of Captain on 5 June 1921. Sold with copied service papers
