James Nickerson was born at Kirby, Essex, on 15 September 1831, and entered the Royal Navy as an ordinary seaman 2nd Class aboard the Crocodile on 29 March 1854. He re-engaged for a further 10 years C.S. when Yeoman of Storerooms aboard Severn in March 1864, was appointed Boatman in the Coastguard in November 1867, and became a Commissioned Boatman in April 1874. Sold with copies of full record of service which shows time aboard H.M. ships James Watt, Boscawen, Cambridge, Royal George, Pallas, Audacious, Vanguard, Achilles, and Warrior.
