Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Talavera (William Taylor, Serjt. 48th Foot) edge rubbed from circular mount, therefore good fine £800-1000

William Talylor was born at Bolton, Lancashire, in about 1781, and enlisted into the 48th Foot on 15 August 1803, aged about 22, a weaver by trade. He was appointed Corporal in 1806 and promoted to Sergeant early in 1808. He was severely wounded at the battle of Talavera necessitating the amputation of one of his legs. The musters show that he was left sick at Talavera da Reyna until December 1810 when he is shown as a prisoner of war. Still shown as a prisoner of war, he disappears from the musters at the end of December 1811. Sergeant William Taylor was discharged at Templemore on 15 April 1815, in ‘consequence of an amputated leg caused by a wound at the battle of Talavera on July 28th, 1809,’ and was admitted to pension ten days later. He died on 22 June 1859. Sold with copy discharge papers and other research.
