Norman William Faith was born on 2 April 1877. Educated at Dulwich College, 1887-92, he served in the Dulwich Cadet Corps, 1889-93, and later the Honourable Artillery Company, 1896-97. He then went to India and was employed by King, King & Co., Bankers of Madras and Bombay (subsequently part of Lloyd’s Bank). In India he joined the Volunteers and was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Madras Volunteer Guards on 21 November 1899. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 29 November 1900, and Captain on 28 February 1902. In 1907 he transferred as a Captain to the Bombay Rifle Volunteers. In February 1912 he was appointed Paymaster, and granted the honorary rank of Major in May 1915. On the formation of the Indian Defence Force in the Great War, he was appointed a Major, 15th Bombay Battalion, I.D.F., on 1 April 1917. He was awarded the Indian Volunteer Forces Officers’ Decoration, this notified in the Gazette of India of 24 February 1917. With copied research including a copied group photograph.
