Rachel Mary Green was born on 28 February 1919. She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service in November 1938 and served in the ranks for 1 year 216 days, serving with the City of London Fusilier Regiment. Miss Green was granted an Emergency Commission as a Company Assistant, A.T.S., on 30 June 1940. She was appointed a 2nd Subaltern on 30 May 1941, War Substantive Subaltern on 23 July 1941, and a Temporary Junior Commander on 27 February 1942. She was a Staff Officer 3rd Class P/A Allied Commission in the C.M.F., October 1944-June 1945, and S.O. 2, June 1945-February 1946, serving in Rome. She was promoted a War Substantive Junior Commander and a Temporary Senior Commander on 10 September 1945, and served as D.A.Q.M.G. P/A at H.Q., C.M.F., February 1946-April 1947, then D.A.D.A.T.S. in A.A. Group, April 1947-November 1948

After the war Green was appointed a Junior Commander in the A.T.S., 1 August 1947; she later took a regular commission and left the Territorial Army. Subaltern (Temporary Senior Commander) Green was awarded the Efficiency Medal, this notified in London Gazette 3 October 1947. She served as Deputy Assistant Director, W.R.A.C., Eastern Command, November 1948-January 1951. On 1 February 1949 Green took a Regular Commission as a Subaltern in the W.R.A.C. and later became a Captain. Green was appointed a Staff Captain in the Department of the Adjutant General of the Forces, February 1951-January 1953, and on 28 February 1953 was promoted to Major. She was awarded a clasp (not in lot) to the Efficiency Medal in the London Gazette of 18 May 1951. Major Green was appointed a G.S.O.3 in the Department of the C.I.G.S., July 1953-September 1955; and was then Deputy Assistant Director, W.R.A.C., in the Department of the Adjutant-General, November 1957-October 1959, after which she was appointed Second-in-Command of the W.R.A.C. School of Instruction at Huron Camp, Hindhead. Following a period as Youth Liaison Officer (Women’s Services), Scottish Command, 1961-62, she was advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel on 9 July 1963. On 8 February 1965 she was appointed Assistant Director, W.R.A.C., Aldershot/South-East District. Green attained the rank of Colonel on 30 June 1968. On 24 January 1969 she became Commandant of the W.R.A.C. College at Portsmouth, holding that appointment until the end of 1971. Latterly employed as G.S.O.1 (Deputy Director) under the Director, W.R.A.C. in the Ministry of Defence, she retired on Retired Pay on 21 March 1974.
