David John Reid was granted a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Highland Volunteer Artillery on 11 April 1896. This Volunteer unit had its headquarters at Inverness. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 14 June 1899 and a Captain on 17 January 1903. Reid was granted the honorary rank of Major on 2 December 1905. In Army Order 273 of October 1909, Reid was awarded the Volunteer Force Long Service Medal. At the time of the Great War, Reid was serving in the North Scottish R.G.A. (T.F.). He was promoted to Major on 1 May 1917. Major Reid resigned his commission whilst retaining his rank on 5 September 1919.
