Cedric John Abbott Hockin enlisted in to the Royal Naval Air Service for the duration in November 1914 and later served in the Royal Air Force. In 1927 he was granted a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th/5th (T.A.) Battalion Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. He was advanced to Lieutenant in May 1930 and Captain in August 1935. Hockin attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in July 1939 and commanded the 4th Battalion D.C.L.I. from mobilization in August 1939 until July 1940. From the Summer of 1940 onwards, Hockin served at sea; first as O.C. Troops on the liners Strathaird and Stratheden; later, from 1943 onwards, on the liner Queen Mary. During the war he was awarded the Efficiency Decoration, this published in the London Gazette of 2 October 1942. Hockin was promoted to Acting Colonel on 1 September 1943 and Temporary Colonel on 1 March 1944. When released at the end of the war, Hockin was granted the Honorary rank of Colonel.
