Ernest George Albert Matthews was born in Bishopsbourne, Kent on 26 February 1874. On 19 February 1894 he was appointed a Sub-Assistant Apothecary in the Indian Subordinate Medical Department (Bengal). This rank was later re-titled ‘Assistant Surgeon 3rd Class’. At this rank he was stationed at Meerut and Cawnpore. In August 1896 he was promoted to Assistant Surgeon 2nd Class, ranking as Sub-Conductor. He was then stationed at Fyzabad and then at Bareilly. During 1897-98 he took part in operations on the North West Frontier. Matthews was awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. Medal by I.A.O. 547 of September 1912. In February 1913 he was promoted to Assistant Surgeon 1st Class, ranking as a Conductor. He was this time seconded for service with the civil authorities, and was in Civil Medical charge at Chakrata. He was promoted to Senior Assistant Surgeon with the Honorary rank of Lieutenant on 5 November 1916. Serving in the Great War, he remained in India and was awarded the British War and India General Service Medals. During and after the war, he was stationed at various civil stations at Muttra, Allahabad, Etawah and Hardoi. In June 1921 he was advanced to Senior Assistant Surgeon with the rank of Captain and in June 1924 he attained the rank of Major. He retired from the service on 26 February 1929.
